Streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Instant Video have been available on game consoles for a while, but if you're in a country where they're blocked, it can be hard to find a way around. There are apps and extensions like Hola Unblocker and Media Hint and that to bypass location restrictions on your computer, but what about your Xbox?
A new service called Unlocator lets you unblock over 60 apps and channels on all your devices from the same account, including the Xbox 360 and One. It even lets you jump back and forth between Netflix content from different regions, so you have access to way more movies and shows.
The service is in beta right now. It's free to register until the official launch, after which there will be a monthly fee of around $4.95. Unlike a lot of streaming services, you don't have to provide a credit card number to sign up for the trial.
How to Setup Unlocator on Your Xbox 360 or One
There's no software to install once you create your account. All you have to do is change the DNS settings on your console. Here's how.
For Xbox 360:
- Go to Mybox --> System Settings
- Select Network Settings, then Wired Network
- Select Configure Network and go to Basic Settings --> DNS Settings
- Choose Manual, then change the Primary to 50.112.186.233 and the Secondary to 50.112.143.40
- Select Done
- Press B to save and restart your console
For Xbox One:
- Go to your Dashboard and press the Options button
- Select Network --> Advanced Settings --> DNS Settings
- Choose Manual, then change the Primary to 50.112.186.233 and the Secondary to 50.112.143.40
- Press B to save and restart your console
After changing the DNS settings, just load up the app you want to use and you're all set. Not all the channels are compatible with the Xbox One yet, but they're working on adding more. Check out the compatibility chart to see which ones are available.
NOTE: If you plan on using the service to watch American channels that aren't available in your country, be sure to use a zip code in the United States when signing up for that channel. And try to be a little more creative than "90210".
